I have just finished Genevieve’s ‘This Is Your Life’ writing course for beginners. It was a really helpful and inspiring introduction to writing about very personal, long forgotten and sometimes difficult memories and experiences. Her comments were thoughtful and encouraging and her suggested readings of other people’s writings were varied and instructive. As we were a small group (previously unknown to each other), we could speak and write freely, and the exercises we worked on in the sessions and at home were stimulating and thought-provoking in exciting and unforeseen ways. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in writing about their life whether as a record of family history, a piece of research or even for publication.

I am hoping to do another class in the New Year!

Resources for writers

Want to read a book on creative writing and how to do it? Here’s the reading list:

1. ‘On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft’ by Stephen King.

It’s a straight-talking, no-messing manual that pre-empts all your excuses for not writing and says: don’t care, get on with it. The joy is, you will. No further reading required.
